Perparing Rice paper for your art
Use Xuan paper (raw, unsized) for more absorbency and dramatic ink effect.
Preparation
Smoothing: Unroll your paper and place it on your felt mat (zhen). Use paperweights (文镇）to hold it down flat. If the paper is very curly, you can lightly mist the back with water and let it relax under weights for a few minutes.
For Modern Calligraphy (with Brush Pends, etc.)
Paper Choice: Smooth, non-absorbent paper like marker paper (Canson), Bristol Board (smooth), or laser printer paper works best to prevent fraying hte brush pen tip.
Preparation: Largely follows the Western calligraphy prep. Use guidelines under a light pad. Ensure your surface is completely clean of dust, which can clog brush pens.
